Meet the graduates building incredible food businesses

Some of the incredible takeaways from people who committed to the DFTA journey.

CONRAD MMOTSA – WINGS NA MATHINGS

Business: Wings Na MaThings (Pty) Ltd
Location: Randburg, Johannesburg
Cohort: First FoodBev SETA Cohort 2023/2024

Before DFTA

Operating a mobile food trailer without proper compliance, without technical food handling knowledge, and without access to premium events that require certification.

After DFTA

  • Fully compliant with health and safety regulations
  • Certificate of Acceptability obtained
  • Traded at Delicious Festival as part of the FoodBev Manufacturing SETA 10 sponsored Graduates
  • Obtained a POS machine to allow smooth cashless trading

DFTA opened doors we couldn’t even knock on before. When you can show certification and compliance, event organizers actually take your applications seriously. The network of fellow traders who help walk this journey with you is invaluable.

THOBILE SIBEKO – TOBS WRAPS

Business: Tobs Wraps
Location: Ekhuruleni
Cohort: First FoodBev SETA Cohort 2023/2024

Before DFTA

Running operations without systems, inconsistent service, no proper costing, and struggling with which menu items were actually profitable.

After DFTA

  • Mobile kitchen is fully compliant with health and safety requirements
  • Simplified menu that’s both profitable and efficient
  • Weekly stock taking and proper inventory management
  • Knows exactly which menu items make profit and are easy to prepare
  • Working on zero food wastage by creating products from leftovers

The costing module changed everything. I now know exactly which menu items make profit and are easy to prepare. I’ve created a menu that caters for different budgets at events. That’s the difference between guessing and knowing.

KABELO NDLOVU – EMA’BHODWENI WITH KABELO

Business: Ema’bhodweni with Kabelo
Location: Soweto
Cohort: First FoodBev SETA Cohort 2023/2024

Before DFTA

Struggling to make profit, unclear pricing, scared to post on social media, unprepared for big events.

After DFTA

  • Now making real profit due to proper costing
  • Employing 3 people
  • Prepared and organized for big events
  • Certificate of Acceptability and Hawkers Licence  obtained
  • POS device for professional payment processing

We’ve grown as a business because we’re now able to make profit. Before DFTA, I was scared of social media. Now I post every day as long as it’s business-related. That confidence came from the academy.
