Our Story

Birth of the DStv Delicious Festival

In October 2013 the DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival launched in Johannesburg.

Over the years the DStv Delicious Festival event has taken place at four different venues. 2013, 2014 and 2015, all on open field government owned parks. By 2016 the event had established itself as South Africa’s premier lifestyle event, attracting 40,000 of Johannesburg’s hottest consumers, and moved to the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.

Delicious Trader Academy

The DStv Delicious Festival has run its Delicious Trading Academy on three separate occasions.  In 2018 and 2019 it was supported by Proudly South African, and in 2022 by Gauteng Tourism Authority.  All these programmes were developed, implemented and managed by Jean Huddy, head of Food for the Delicious International Food & Music Festival since 2016.

These programs were created as an annual program to upskill and train informal business owners who want to operate consistently & successfully at a more formal level.

COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about unprecedented challenges, leaving a significant void in the festival food industry, particularly after festivals identified the pressing need for skills development, job creation, and a positive economic impact on the community.

However, when the world was gripped by the pandemic, festivals and events, including those centred around hospitality, were either cancelled or dramatically downsized. Public gatherings were discouraged, and the livelihoods of festival food traders, who were an integral part of the overall hospitality experience, hung precariously in the balance. The broader hospitality industry, encompassing hotels, restaurants, and related services, also faced unprecedented challenges, with many businesses having to adapt or temporarily close their doors.

Amidst these unprecedented challenges and an uncertain future, many food traders faced the daunting reality of seeking alternative sources of income, a predicament mirrored across various segments of the hospitality sector. This crisis didn’t merely affect them on an individual level; it cast a shadow over the entire hospitality landscape. These sectors, once vibrant and essential engines of activity and economic growth, found themselves grappling with profound setbacks and uncertainties due to the disruptive forces of the pandemic, underscoring the deep interconnections between hospitality and events like the DStv Delicious Festival.

It is within this challenging context, shaped by both the pre-existing needs identified by DStv Delicious Festival and the seismic shifts caused by the pandemic, that the Delicious Festival Trader Academy comes into focus. This academy transcends being a mere response to the shortage of food traders; it serves as a beacon of hope, a sanctuary where the heritage of Trader cuisine can be safeguarded and creatively rejuvenated. It stands as a testament to resilience, showcasing that even in the face of adversity, the entrepreneurial spirit and passion for exquisite food can persist and thrive once more.

Simultaneously, it acts as a catalyst for skills development, job creation, and the revitalisation of local economies, breathing new life into the heart of the hospitality industry.
